Give it a shot

If you “give it a shot”, you try something to see if it will work or if you might like it. Usually we say this to someone to motivate them to try something… or we say this when we are going to try something that might be difficult for us. You can also say, “Give it a try”.
-> UPS = United Parcel Service (delivery of mail/ parcels)
-> A battering ram is a "machine" used to break down doors or walls.

1. I had never enjoyed the idea of eating raw fish (sushi), but then recently I decided to give it a shot. I must say that I’m enjoying it more than I thought I would!

2. Have you ever taken a risk with a business idea or given it a shot and applied for a job at a company that you thought might be impossible for you to work at?

3. We have a very common expression in English: “If at first you don’t succeed… try and try again”. We say this to people to encourage them. You could also say, “Why don’t you give it another shot?

4. When you are faced with an opportunity, you should give it a shot, because probably you’ve got nothing to lose.

5. Barack Obama, at some point, despite the odds (probabilities) and the obstacles he would face, decided to give it a shot and run for president.

6. If you had to give it a shot and try to break a world record, which record would you try to break? There are some records that are relatively easy to break… for example; if you can wear more than 155 t-shirts at once (at the same time) then you will break that particular record. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6tlw-oPDBM

  1. If you've never written a comment here, why don't you give it a shot... even if you don't think your English is that great?!

  2. Hello,
I don't really understand what happens in the comic strip. Is the stone thrown by the guards on the tower, and how about the 'battering ram'?.

  3. What is happening is that the person knocking at the door is pretending to be a mail man from UPS (United Parcel Service). He is pretending that he has a parcel, a letter or some kind of delivery, so that they open the door... but they didn't believe him... the people in the tower knew that he was an enemy, and dropped a rock on him.

One of the other soldiers at a distance says that it was worth trying (giving it a shot)... but now that the original plan didn't work, they would need to use the "battering ram". Here is a picture of a battering ram:

A battering ram is a "machine" or a simple pole that people use to break down the walls or door of a fort/ castle etc.

    I hope this helps!

  4. Hello Frank,
It is indeed helpful. UPS doesn't ring a bell because I'm in the UK so I thought 'UPS' is just a sound the soldier made or something. Just shows how important geography is! :)
    Thank you very much.

  5. Hi to the commenter above...

I assume you speak English as a first language just by the way you write. Anyways, almost everyone who comes here is an English learner... so your question highlighted an important thing I was missing out on... I can easily write an explanation/ description of something (like a battering ram) and create a link to an online image. I modified the post above... and in the future I will be conscious of explaining things better (especially cryptic comic strips!)

Let me know if you have any suggestions for my blog.

    Cheers,
    Frank
